Val Farrell, who was agisting sheep on her property for a friend while their paddock was regenerating, said she was devastated at the discovery last Monday.
‘‘The sheep had been attacked during the night by a dog or dogs and left alive bleeding and brutally savaged,’’ she said.
‘‘The local vet was called and the animals were put down immediately.’’
Another Musk Vale resident, Lisa Allwood, wrote to Fairfax Media to say she had a similar experience a couple of nights later.
‘‘Last Wednesday, at some stage through the night, our small herd of four adult sheep were savagely attacked by a dog or pack of dogs.’’
The Foxs Lane resident said one of her sheep was killed and another badly injured as a result of the attack.
Ms Allwood said she wanted to warn others about the havoc the dogs had wrought.
‘‘Unfortunately, this is the second such incident (that we’re aware of) to have occurred in Musk Vale within the space of a few days,’’ she said.
‘‘The purpose of this letter is not only to alert fellow livestock owners, but more so to plead to all dog owners out there, of which I am one, to keep their dogs secured at night.’’
Hepburn Shire general manager infrastructure Bruce Lucas said council officers responded to a report of a dog attack on two sheep in Musk Vale last week.
‘‘The attack is believed to have occurred one to two days prior to the report being received and as a result the dogs were not able to be identified,’’ he said.
