Despite good conditions and some solid batting from a number of players, Trentham A-reserve and B-grade cricket teams failed in their bids to pass big scores posted by their opponents the previous week.

The A-reserve team started the day at two for 35 aiming to pass Daylesford’s score of 262. Harley Forgo was dismissed early by Michael Cummings for 23 runs with the score on 48.
Sam Bruton and Janaka Wijerathne batted steadily and were building a promising partnership before Janaka was bowled by Sam Winnard for another good score of 4.
The fifth and sixth wickets of Joe Clarke, 0, and skipper Adam Prewett, seven, quickly followed putting Trentham on the back foot with some 150 runs still to get. Sam Bruton was joined by Sam Hewitt and the pair batted soundly to take the score to 156 when Bruton was out LBW to Shewell for a well-made 33 runs.
Sam Hewitt was the next wicket to go, bowled by Cummings for a solid 27, and when John Cowell was dismissed soon after for four, Trentham had slumped to nine for 188. Jake Sartori was providing slim hopes of a victory with some effective big hitting but he was finally out for 27. The final score was a reasonable 200 with several good contributors.
The Trentham B-grade team resumed at 0 for one chasing Elphinstone’s imposing score of 264. Accurate bowling from opening bowlers J. McHale and R. Gifford made runs difficult to score. Mark Reid was the first batsman to go for four runs with the score on 13 from 10 overs. Paul Keane and Jack Boyer then put on 20 before Jack was caught for 12. Paul Keane, 17, and Dennis Thomas, four, followed in quick succession to leave Trentham in serious trouble at four for 38.
Ray Tadd and Ted Cooper added another 23 in quick time before Ray was dismissed for 18. Ted Cooper was the sixth batsman to go for a patient 12 runs with the score on 83. Dean Price was batting well hitting some big shots through the on-side but wickets continued to tumble. The dismissals of Thomas Boyer, one, Dean Price, 27, and Jake Prewett, three, saw Trentham reach nine for 118 off 51 overs.
At this point, with only 15 overs left, skipper Steve Carrigg joined Alistair Thompson at the crease and the fireworks began. In a great display of sensible batting and power hitting, this pair remained unbeaten at stumps with a partnership of 58 runs. Trentham’s final score of nine for 176 was a lot more respectable than it looked like being. Steve Carrigg finished with 16 runs and Alistair Thompson finished with a valuable and highly entertaining 55, including six towering sixes.
This week, Trentham A-reserve play against Newstead at home and B-grade takes on Barkers Creek away.
