Girl critical after large TV falls on her

21 Jan, 2010 11:23 AM
A four-year-old girl has been treated for serious head injuries after a television fell on her in Melbourne's east.

Paramedics were called to a Mulgrave home about 11.15am and found the girl in a bedroom with her face and head bloodied.

Intensive care paramedic Andrew Bishop said a large-screen television, weighing about 30 kilograms, had fallen on the girl.

"The television had been on top of a chest of drawers and fell about one and a half metres onto the girl's head," Mr Bishop said

"We were told she was unconscious for up to three minutes before we arrived.

"When we arrived she was semiconscious and had blood coming from her ears and nose.

"We inserted two drips into her arms. Through these we gave her powerful pain relief and anti nausea medication, as well as fluids to help stabilise her blood pressure.

"Given her potential for spinal injury, we moved her using equipment designed to keep her as still as possible.

"We also fitted her with a heart monitor and oxygen mask,' Mr Bishop said.

The girl has been taken to the Royal Children's Hospital in a critical condition.
