THEY started as a group of friends who wanted to learn a sport and now, two years later, they are preparing to compete in the state volleyball championships.
The girls, all year year students from Daylesford Secondary College, will attend the state championships at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on November 26.
Team member Kara Cooper said it was their close friendship that made the team what it was.
"I really don't think it would work as well if we were not all friends," she said. "We encourage each other pretty much the whole time we're on the court."
They recently beat Grovedale at the Western Zone Country Championships at Geelong, only losing one set out of all the games they played.
The win set them up for their second shot at the state championships in Melbourne.
The team made it to state level last year and the girls finished fourth. They hope to do even better this time around.
"We're better then we were," Cooper said.
To boost their morale on the day they plan to use their "claps" - one during the game and one if they win.
The girls devised their clapping routine as a way to keep their spirits up during play.
"It revs us up," team member J-Mara McDonald said.
Daylesford Secondary College's interschool sport co-ordinator Martyn Nettleton described the team as "a very close group".
He said they had been training together in their lunch breaks twice a week since the beginning of last year.
"They're a good team and a very even team," Nettleton said.
He said the team's coaches Colin Priest and Shane Coleiro had been instrumental in making volleyball a major force within the school.
