Smeaton victorious

SMEATON claimed its third Mt Prospect Tennis Association Senior Pennant premiership in a row at the weekend.

The grand finals were played out on the weekend in stifling conditions.

The A-grade pennant saw the closest match played out in years between Lawrence and Smeaton.

During the season both sides had beaten each other and the match was poised for a nail-biter.

Lawrence's Kevin Haintz and Andrew Seamons didn't miss a beat against the Smeaton pairing of Rod Male and James Maher.

The second set saw the Lawrence men again take the lead with Haintz teaming up with John Kinnersly.

They took on Male and the Smeaton stalwart Peter Sewell.

The Smeaton pairing couldn't gain any ground on the Lawrence men with both Lawrence men playing extremely well.

The final men's set saw Maher and Sewell of Smeaton gain an early lead.

The Lawrence men of Seamons and Kinnersly clawed back and eventually made a clean sweep of the men's sets.

The Lawrence men had done a terrific job to give their side the upper hand to the tune of 11 games.

The Lawrence women tried to extend the lead.

Tracey Amarant and Kim Lovett of Smeaton got their side back on track.

They took on Maria Stephens and Fiona Williams with the latter going down to the Smeaton pairing.

Amarant teamed up with Anne Turley for Smeaton to try and pull the game back in its favour.

They were too strong and consistent for their Lawrence opponents in Stephens and Larelle Holloway.

The final women's set saw the Smeaton women again take control of the match.

Lovett and Turley took to the court against the Lawrence duo of Williams and Holloway.

The Smeaton women had wrestled back the 11 game lead to put the game on level pegging going in to the mixed.

Sewell and Amarant of Smeaton took on Haintz and Stephens with the Smeaton duo playing some outstanding tennis to win the set 8-4.

Seamons and Williams of Lawrence took on Male and Lovett. The Lawrence pairing won 8-4.

The Smeaton pairing of Maher and Turley had their work cut out for them against the experienced duo of Kinnersly and Holloway.

The match was all tied up with the final mixed set being six games all. Both sides were tense watching the final set of the grand final.

Maher and Turley played some brilliant tennis in the final two games of the set to claim victory in the set eight to six and also to claim a third successive premiership for Smeaton.

Smeaton had won by two games with the result coming down to the wire.

The A-reserve final saw Invermay taking on Kingston Red. Kingston Red finished runner-up last year and was keen to make amends this year.

Steve Vanderkley of Kingston Red battled hard all day while Ange Read of Invermay played some great tennis.

Invermay secured its first premiership with a hard fought 10 game win over Kingston Red.

The section one grand final saw St Augustines Red take on St Augustines Black with the latter running out premiers. Russel Bowey played well for the runners-up, while Jenny Rimene made sure that her side took out the

premiership.

The grand final in section two saw St Augustines White take out the premiership by a mere game over St Augustines Gold.

Renee MacKenzie played will for St Augustines Gold but couldn't quite get her side over the line while Ned Curwood won his three sets for the day to help his side claim the premiership.
