Ken Charles and Michelle Adams take out the major titles in the Daylesford senior lawn tennis

02 Mar, 2010 12:22 PM
DAYLESFORD Lawn Tennis Club conducted its 2010 championships over the weekend of February 27-28.

In generally fine, windy conditions honours were shared between club stalwarts and recent arrivals.

The event further confirms the resurgence of the club as a venue for enjoyable tennis and social activity.

Highlights of the weekend included the participation by a number of players who have moved up from junior ranks, and the impressive form of players usually in section three.

If their form from the championships continues, there will be some big changes in the ladder.

In the men's open singles the new champion is Ken Charles who defeated Pete Ekstedt 6/4, 7/6 in a closely fought battle of contrasting styles.

In the end it was Charle's court craft that enabled him to go frequently to the net.

Once there his volleying was deadly.

The new women's open singles champion, Michelle Adams, is the third member of her family to claim the title, following her mother Helen Jenkin and sister Leanne Purtell.

Adams beat Ros Roberts 6/2, 6/3.

A grade men's doubles champions are Adrian Maude and Ken Charles after prevailing 9/8 over Darren Ingram and Pete Ekstedt, while A grade women's doubles winners Lynne Dwyer and Michelle Adams accounted for their opponents, Ros Roberts and Phoenix Salinger, in the final

in a somewhat more relaxed fashion, 8/5.

Both the A and B grade mixed doubles featured a series of very close matches between evenly-matched pairs.

In the A grade semi-finals Darren and Bec Ingram survived a tie-breaker against Pat and Lynn Dwyer, while Pete Ekstedt and Phoenix Salinger saw off the challenge of Greg Malcher and Ros Roberts 8/6.

In the final match of the weekend the Ingrams savoured an impressive 8/4 victory over Ekstedt and Salinger.

The B grade mixed doubles semi-finals saw Shane and Erin Richardson edge out Michelle Adams and Pete Risstrom 9/8 in a tie-break and John Turnbull and Gabe Kirby conquer the pairing of Trish Kevin and Rob Fookes 9/7.

In an exciting and perhaps predictably close final, Turnbull and Kirby won 8/6.

The final of the B grade men's singles saw Geoff Parentich pitted against Shane Richardson in a see-sawing, edge-of-the-seat, winner-take-all arm-wrestle in which Richardson finally completed a remarkable 8/6 victory.
