Young gun triumphs

HE'S only 23, but Neville Rodda can show the older blokes a thing or two on the green.

The former Daylesford Bowling Club player now with Sebastopol took out the coveted BRBA Champion of Champions title recently.

It's just another accolade for Rodda, who has had many bowling achievements since he began playing at 12.

"It was just one of those sports where you walked past and thought it looked easy, but it was a bit different when we had a go. I got sucked in," he said.

Today, he is among the new generation of young people playing a stereotypically "older person's sport" but, for Rodda, it has taught him many things.

"You relate to a diverse range of people, so it's really good for your public relations, and I think you can actually learn a lot from the older generations," he said.

And the best thing about bowls is being able to mentally outdo your opponent.

"It's being able to perform under pressure, play the big bowls when you need them - a lot of people can't do that," Rodda said.

"Also, the skill of being able to consistently put a bowl within six inches of a jack 30m away is a very hard skill to master."

Currently, Rodda represents the Ballarat Regional Bowls Association, is in the state under-25 development squad and is playing his second season of Ballarat/Geelong premier league with Sebastopol.

He has also notched up more than 200 pennant games.

Among his awards are the Ballarat and District Singles Championship in 2003/2004: two group one under-30 singles championships; and runner-up in the state under-30 singles 2004 and 2007 BRBA singles championship, as well as the state under-18s.

But winning the Champion of Champions meant just one thing for Rodda - consistency.

"It's fair enough to win a state championship, but to be able to go out and consistently beat all the other champions proves you're a consistent player," he said.

Rodda will now contest the group one finals in Trentham on March 2.
