Taekwondo Club brought home 23 medals in
various age, belt and weight divisions at the 2005 Ballarat and Western Victorian
Taekwondo Championships.
The competition attracted a record field with more than of 350 individual entries.
There were 60 black belt competitors, colour belts, juniors, seniors and veteran competitors.
Four events were contested including olympic sparring, self-defence, international (WTF) patterns and creative patterns to music.
Daylesford Taekwondo Club featured prominently in the medals with both senior and junior championship trophies going to Daylesford.
The senior champions' trophy was contested by eight divisional gold medallists and
eventually won by Daylesford black belt Shane Morrison, a second Dan.
In olympic sparring, experienced national and international under 18 black belt
competitor Jason Dyer reaffirmed his position as the leading junior in the region.
The junior black belt champion's trophy was hotly contested initially by more than 30
junior black belts that were reduced to a final eight in a play-off.
Talented Daylesford junior black belt Katelyn Bugden won the award for the second year.
Olympic sparring events were contested under World Taekwondo Federation and
Olympic rules.
They were supervised by international referee Ali Rahimi.
Black belt technical events were judged by Hung-ah Shin, 5th Dan black belt, a Korean
born taekwondo instructor and international judge.
Event organiser and Daylesford taekwondo instructor Russell Trainor was overwhelmed
with the interest in the event.
He said the large number of entries required four competition rings to operate for eight hours of competition.
The competition is held annually with support from the state governing body Taekwondo Victoria.
