WHEN racewalker Jared Tallent saw the new-look MCG last month, he was even more eager to wear the Australian colours at his first Commonwealth Games.
The 21-year-old from Rocklyn, walked his way into the Commonwealth Games after finishing third in the 20km walk at the National Track and Field Championships held in Sydney on February 4.
Tallent's qualifying time of 1:25:22 put him among the Commonwealth's top three racewalkers.
"It's fantastic. It's a great opportunity to go to the Commonwealth Games," he said.
Tallent said he raced at the weekend over 5km and has a few hard training sessions to go before tapering off for his race.
"I've done quite well and I feel fit," he said.
"All of my training has been going towards competing at the Games."
The Australian Institute of Sport member will front his biggest rivals and fellow Australians at the games - Nathan Deakes and Luke Adams.
All athletes train at the AIS under different coaches. Tallent said he would have to beat Adams and Deakes to claim gold at the Games.
He said Australia was in the running to win first, second and third in the 20km event.
"I want to win a medal," Tallent said.
He said an athlete from Kenya who won bronze at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester would be the one to watch.
Tallent will race at the Docklands in front of the Telstra Dome on Monday, March 20. He will complete a 2km course 10 times.
"I can't wait to race in Melbourne. It's one of those things," he said.
He said he visited the MCG and was excited to race so close to home.
Tallent, a Ballarat YCW member, said family and friends would cheer him on at the Games. Parents Peter and Kathy said they were proud of their son's achievements.
"We're looking forward to it," Mrs Tallent said.
