BALLARAT Roller Derby League president Haylee "Seven Lux" Hartley is looking forward to bringing the fast and furious sport of roller derby to Daylesford ARC for this weekend's ChillOut celebrations.
"Derby Inferno" will be the new league's second ever public bout and will also serve as a grudge match between the Gold Diggers and the Libertines. Roller derby, a spectacular full-contact sport played on roller skates, found a place in Ballarat last November, when the league hosted
its first bout, the "Derbytante Brawl".
The event, attended by more than 400 spectators, saw the Gold Diggers just scrape through to take the title.
Ms Hartley said both teams were taking the rematch very seriously.
"There's a bit of trash talk on Facebook already," she said.
"It's a points scoring game. Each team scores points by lapping the other team.
"I think full-contact roller derby is just as exciting for the crowds as for the players."
Ms Hartley said staging the bout during the ChillOut celebrations was a great opportunity for the league.
"We're a very gay friendly sport and there are a lot of gay people in the sport," she said.
"For a small regional league, this could be the biggest regional roller derby event of the year. We're trying to get 1000 people along and they're usually numbers only Melbourne can pull."
The event will be held at Daylesford Secondary School's basketball stadium on Saturday, March 6. Doors open at 3pm with the bout beginning at 4pm.
The crowd will also be treated to a special co-ed scrimmage.
Children under the age of five will receive free entry. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children over five, with $1 from every ticket sold being donated to the CFA's Fire Safety Campaign.
