THE Glenlyon and District Pony Club celebrated its 40th anniversary this year.
During the history of the club the membership numbers have risen and fallen and it has changed location.
Glenlyon and District Pony Club president Claire Taubert, said the club was originally founded by Frank Irving and held on his property in Wheatsheaf, then was moved to Victoria Park, and finally, moving to and located for most of its life at the Glenlyon
Reserve.
"The pony club to this day has remained a vibrant and strong organisation," she said.
Presently, Glenlyon and District Pony Club has 22 riding members, ranging in age from four to 23 years, plus many non-riding adult members and life members.
"The aim of the club is to provide a positive, safe and fun environment for the young riders to develop their equestrian skills and knowledge," Ms Taubert said.
The club's rallies are held every third Sunday of the month.
The day begins with a gear check at 9.30am. Lessons begin by 10am and finish by 3pm.
Ms Taubert said the children were grouped together in small groups of four to eight riders depending on the experience of the horse and the rider and to a lesser degree the age of the rider.
Several fund raising events are held each year in an effort to raise much needed extra money to run the club.
On Sunday, November 6, 2005 the club will hold its first showjumping event.
It is open to all riders not just pony club members.
The club also runs two one-day events each year on the last Sunday in February and again in April.
This style of equestrian events involve the competitors at different levels of difficulty completing three different elements including dressage, showjumping and cross-country jumps.
These events are held at the picturesque Glenlyon Reserve, are very popular and attract up to 180 riders from clubs across Victoria alonf with many spectators who enjoy both the thrills and fun of the event and the local surrounds.
Ms Taubert said the Glenlyon and District Pony Club welcomed new members.
She said the club was running a sponsorship drive amongst local families and businesses to develop further financial and community support.
