COOMOORA'S Stephanie Barrell has set herself a long career in dressage with the support from her family and champion dressage rider Renee Pedretti.
The 15-year-old has been riding since the tiny age of six at the Glenlyon Pony Club and has worked her way to state and national level.
When the Ballarat Grammar student gets home at 5pm she makes the most of the remaining daylight and goes through a 40-minute training session.
"Mum is very helpful. It's hard because you can't treat riding like tennis or golf - it's high-maintenance," Barrell said.
"I'm instructed by Mum, who always puts up with my moods."
Barrell said she enjoyed being outdoors with her horses.
"It's satisfying when the horses start doing something successful," she said.
"We have an arena at home, so that makes it easier."
Mrs Barrell, who also rides, said her daughter was committed, dedicated and determined about her riding.
"It's nice to see her getting rewards for it," she said.
Barrell realised her potential after successful results in the state championships.
So far in her career, Barrell has secured the State Young Rider title in medium and reserve elementary levels, and Young Rider Champion in elementary reserve medium for the State Championship All-Age.
Competing locally and around Victoria, Barrell has qualified for the National Young Rider Championships in Sydney in July.
She hopes to go to Germany in the future and compete at the dressage grand prix, similar to her hero Pedretti, who has trained in Germany and currently is an international trainer.
The two have worked together and Mrs Barrell described them as a "good blend".
Barrel rides two horses, Flurt and Ruby, who are owned by Suyin Ng and Claire Taubett respectively.
