DAYLESFORD'S Katelyn Bugden and Shane Morrison were too good for their competitors at the National Taekwondo Championships held in Adelaide last month.

The Daylesford Taekwondo Club members produced gold medal performances in their age groups.

It has taken Bugden, 12, just two seasons of competition and hard work to become the national champion in the junior section.

Morrison, 48, had won his section three times previously.

Morrison said he took up the sport in 1998 and had competed in Korea where it originated.

"I was very happy with my performance. I was strong in my moves," he said.

Bugden was thrilled with her performance in which she had to complete three patterns in front of four international judges.

"I had to wait four to five hours on the floor. I was second up," she said.

"I kept thinking I had made a mistake. I thought I got bronze because my name was read out first."

Daylesford Taekwondo Club principal instructor Russell Trainor said the sheer number of entries ensured a competitive competition with 1400 entries for the three days of the championships.

"The Australian Taekwondo Championships is the largest martial arts competition in Australia," he said.

The next competition for Daylesford Taekwondo competitors is the Ballarat Regional Taekwondo Championships to be held in Wendouree on Sunday, October 22.
