Longley hands over walk-on role

27 Feb, 2008 09:45 AM
AFTER eight years leading Daylesford Neighbourhood Walking Group, Bill Longley is now happy to walk behind.

Longley, who is is also a volunteer student mentor at Daylesford High School, has been part of the walking group for many years.

The group, which includes more than 20 members, walk each week at various locations in the bush within a 40km radius of Daylesford.

Mr Longley said he had no particular favourite walk, but each September and October he took walkers through the bush to Lafranchi's Hut.

"There are daffodils growing in September and bluebells in October, so it's always a nice walk," he said.

Longley believes the best thing about Daylesford's walking group is the people.

"You meet lots of nice people and you enjoy the wildlife ... it's always an area where you can walk safely," he said.

And, although the reins are being handed over the "the younger ones", Longley won't give up his weekly walks.

"I'm 75, and it keeps me looking young and fit," he said.
