FOUR Creswick residents head to the United States next month for the 13th World Flying Disc Federation's World Junior Ultimate Championships.
Daniel Rule, Arwyn Cartledge, Tarrant Meehan and Greta Hunt will represent Australia in the flying disc, or ultimate frisbee, tournament, which will see the best under-20 players from 10 countries compete for the world
championship in Massachusetts from August 13 to 18.
Ultimate frisbee is a fast, free-flowing game which combines elements of netball, soccer, grid-iron and touch football.
The aim is for the team with the frisbee to pass the disc up the field until they catch it in the endzone. The defensive team tries to intercept the frisbee or knock it down.
Arwyn Cartledge, who has been playing ultimate frisbee for almost four years, described the game as a "spirited and fair game."
"I like that it's self refereed, and you get to use lots of different skills," the 18-year-old said.
She is training five days a week in preparation for the championships.
The Australian junior team consists of 17 females and 21 males.
Daniel Rule said both Australian teams would compete in two 80-minute games each day of the tournament.
"By the end of each day, we will barely be able to walk," the 18-year-old said.
He said each team member faced a strict diet and training regime in the lead-up to the tournament.
* Each of the Creswick team members must pay more than $4000 to cover the expenses of competing in the U.S. Anyone interested in providing sponsorship or making a donation to help cover costs can contact Arwyn on 5345
