Dipping into new waters

24 Oct, 2006 12:39 PM
DESPITE a few windy starts, the rowing season has begun for three Ballarat secondary schools at the Newlyn Reservoir.

St Patrick's, Ballarat Grammar and Ballarat High School were forced to look elsewhere for water when water levels dropped at Lake Wendouree.

Without the luxury of boat houses, the rowers have taken to the reservoir on allocated days.

Ballarat High School boat junior captain Megan Fraumano said the reservoir was a really windy place, especially for the junior rowers.

"We've been lucky to get a few good days," she said.

"Everyone is glad to have water especially this close (to school)."

Ms Fraumano said the schools were sharing the boats.

Last season the rowers were having to travel long distances to Nagambie and Geelong to train.

"We are very grateful for Newlyn to row here," Ms Fraumano said.

Ballarat High School rowing director Peter Jeffery said the school trained on the reservoir every Thursday and Sunday.

"We are very excited to have some water to row on especially for the firsts who have been waiting for their turn," he said.

Mr Jeffery said the school was preparing for a competition in Geelong next month.
