SQUASH enthusiasts are taking action to reclaim their playing facilities and start a new wave of competition in Daylesford. Community members will meet next Monday at the Daylesford Senior Citizens Club, behind the Town Hall, at 6.30pm, with the intention of starting an evening
weekly competition and having courts available to squash players on weekends.
Daylesford Squash club member Joseph Rozen said that the squash courts had been closed when building started on the ARC in 2007.
"We've had a squash club in Daylesford since 1985 and we had more than 100 people playing in the competition from Daylesford and outlying areas," Mr Rozen said.
"There was never any consultation with the squash club when the ARC elected to use the courts as a storage area."
Another member Paul Frost said many squash players in Daylesford had been forced to play as far afield as Ballarat, Kyneton, Melton and Woodend.
"It's ridiculous when the community has the facilities here," Mr Frost said.
Mr Rozen said the squash club had coached juniors and three of them had made it to state-level championships.
"It was a fantastic effort for a small country town," Mr Rozen said.
"There's no opportunity to coach kids any more and a lot of parents want their children to play."
Mr Rozen said the Monday meeting would be an opportunity for anyone to express interest in playing squash and to push to have the courts at the ARC returned to their former use.
"It's a community facility that can't be used for what it was built for," Mr Rozen said.
