THE Creswick and District Motorcycle Club is gearing up for one of its biggest years yet, with 180 competitors expected as it enters its 30th year of riding.
Originally a family fun day of bicycle riding, sack races and tug-of-wars founded by Max Ainsley, the club is now a motorcycle gymkhana for children aged between four and 16.
Competitors ride in a lane of six, zig-zagging between 14 poles as fast as they can.
They also ride straight up and down the lane. Each competitor is graded on how good they are.
Categories include 50cc, 65cc, 80cc and over, 80cc to 100cc two-stroke and 125 four-stroke.
Creswick and District Motorcycle Club president Shaun Bartholemeu said trophies are presented at every meeting for first and second place-getters, while third place gets a ribbon.
"Every child gets their name called out and takes home a competitors ribbon," he said.
"The club focuses on families and children."
Mr Bartholemeu said the sport is non-competitive and more laidback than motorcross riding.
"It is all for the kids," he said.
Last year there were 182 competitors.
The club branches out as far as St Arnaud, Deer Park, Kyneton and Geelong.
It is also a safe sport with three ambulances and eight marshals on the track at all times.
"There hasn't been an injury for 30 years," Mr Bartholemeu said.
The club has special races each year including a mother's and father's day meeting, a club birthday meeting and a non-ride day. It holds its meetings on the first Sunday of every month.
Competitors meet at 9am at the Allendale Reserve, Lone Hand Rd, for a 10am start. There are five races in the morning, a lunch break, then four races in the afternoon.
The club will celebrate its 30th birthday on October 1, with trophies presented to every child.
The first meeting of the year will be held this Sunday.
New competitors, both girls and boys, are welcome. Helmets, goggles and gloves are provided for newcomers and there is also a loans box available.
