Axemen at their best as Lyonville holds its annual woodchop event

09 Feb, 2010 11:20 AM
COMPETITION at last Saturday's Lyonville woodchop was close and exciting, organisers said.

In contrast to the horrendous conditions of Black Saturday last year, the Lyonville Hall Committee and the Midlands Axemans Association conducted their annual woodchop in sunny, mild weather.

Organisers were pleased with the number of junior and novice axemen competing.

Competition among the open axemen was close.

Handicapper Gary Suckling must be congratulated as many events and placings were decided by a single blow.

Top Victorian Axeman, Brad Haines from Ballarat always seems to produce his best efforts at Lyonville, again winning the 13th Standing Block Championship and also the Bill Maloney Memorial Trophy for the most aggregate points on the day.

The fine chopping of Glen Hansford to win both Open Underhand and Standing Block Handicap finals was a just reward for his family as they had been great supporters of this woodchop for many years, organisers said.

Raffle winners 1st-9th: A. Bremner, N. Hayes, David Yoxall, A. Kusminsky, P. Trimble, B. Dalgleish, Simon R. Kidwell and C. Evans.
