A future champion

ARC Indoor Recreation Centre has produced its first state representative.

Alexey Korinfsky beat 269 other hopefuls to gain selection in the Victorian under 17 volleyball squad.

He will compete in the National Junior Championships in Melbourne from July 7 to 12. The 17-year-old plays for a Kyneton team in a competition at the ARC Monday nights.

He's also been part of Daylesford junior teams which have competed in tournaments at Ballarat, Melbourne and Bendigo.

He attends elite training in Ballarat under the direction of experienced coach Colin Priest.

Alexey said family had introduced him to the sport and supported his quest to achieve national success.

"It's not something that a lot of people my age play. But I really enjoy it and want to succeed in the years to come," Korinfsky said.

Priest said volleyball was an ideal team sport and provided young people with a great opportunity to develop an elite sports career. He said Korinfsky had a bright future ahead of him.

"He has a strong passion and trains hard so he could go a long way," Priest said.

His training program has grown with his development and now includes monthly weekend training camps across Victoria with other state squad members.

He will undergo another selection process before the final team is announced. He will then travel to weekly training sessions at Horsham.

Korinfsky is looking for community support and sponsorship to help reduce the costs of travelling and training.

Victoria's final team will be announced on April 6.

Korinfsky is a Kyneton Secondary College student.
