CENTRAL Highlands football and netball will be split on grand final day.
League netballers have voted to take their marquee event to Learmonth because there was no suitable netball court at Eureka Stadium, where the Bendigo Bank Central Highlands Football League grand finals will be staged on September 12.
Central Highlands Netball League secretary Kaylene Trigg said the move would split families and disappoint netballers but it was all about finding a court that fits best.
"First option is to have Northern Oval if both football and netball can be done together. Next year is a whole different ball game but this season that venue is football's best option and Learmonth is netball's best option," Ms Trigg said.
"We wanted to go where our members were most happy."
CHNL representatives met last Wednesday night to discuss options.
They turned down an offer from the football league for a shuttle bus to run from Eureka Stadium to the nearby Wendouree Reserve netball courts on grand final day.
Ms Trigg said netballers were happier with the surface at Learmonth, a CHFL ground, where there were also more suitable catering and scoring facilities.
An alternative grand final date was deemed unviable.
It is believed a meeting in July between all league football and netball representatives agreed to keep all games together on grand final day.
CHFL secretary Diane Ryan said that when planning began in June it seemed likely the Eureka Stadium netball courts would be completed in time.
"We were hoping they would choose a court that would be a reasonable travel time to North Ballarat," she said.
She said the number of people expected at the grand final, along with financial considerations, made Learmonth a non-option.
"The other problem is Learmonth is in the finals and (the constitution) does state no team should have a home-ground advantage," Ryan said.
She said there had been no negative feedback from the football clubs about using Eureka Stadium.
"Next year, hopefully, we'll be all back together and everyone will be happy."
A decision on gate takings at the netball grand finals is still under discussion.
