IN THE week of Tigermania a riveting day's play on Saturday, November 14, saw Bernie Frith and Nicole Olver win their stripes on the pristine Daylesford lawn courts.
Yogi Bear's adage was validated as both sections were definitely not over until they were over.
In section two it came down to the proverbial wire as Nicole Olver capitalised on her 6/1, 6/2 start to combine in the final set with visitor Stef Webb to defeat her top-spot rivals Lynn Dwyer and Trish Kevin, 6/4.
In the end, Olver triumphed 21/13, 0.04 per cent ahead of Dwyer on 22/14.
Kevin, with 21/14, showed improved form to finish third, ahead of Webb with 19/14.
Next was Stephen Boyd 20/17, with Maddy Ingham sixth on 28/16, just pipping Gerard Ingham on 19/18.
In section one Bernie Frith's 6/1, 6/0 finish swept Paddy Dwyer aside. Dwyer had led until the final set with initial sets of 7/6, 6/1, 6/1.
In the gathering gloom Bernie and Pete Ekstedt bagelled Rob Fookes and Paddy Dwyer 6/0, resulting in Bernie's 21/12 edging out Dwyer's 19/14.
Pete Ekstedt was third with 19/15, edging out the unlucky Jeremy Harper with 25/20 after he lost just two tie-break sets for the day yet came fourth. Tough, huh?
Thursday evening tennis continues this week from 6pm to 8pm.
Those intending to play can contact Rob Fookes on 5348 7860, or turn up at the courts in West St at 5.45pm.
This competition will be for players of all standards and is designed to provide a tennis option for those unable to play on Saturdays, or for players wanting some extra competition.
Fees are reasonable - $4 for members and $10 for non-members for two hours play on the lawn courts.
The Saturday season progresses on November 21: players are required to attend by 1pm for registration to achieve a 1.30pm start, to avoid late finishes.
The ladder format means that players unable to participate in a particular week can opt out and visitors and intermittent players (who are most welcome) can be easily accommodated.
Senior players of all standards are catered for.
