IMAGINE running a golf tournament for 120 grade five and six students many of whom had only held a golf club a few times.
Students from Daylesford, Hepburn and St Michaels primary schools converged on the Hepburn Springs Golf Club to play in the inaugural Schools Tournament recently.
As the students set out in groups of four to play nine holes of golf, many started the day not quite connecting the golf club to the ball.
But, by the end of the tournament they were hitting balls along fairways, putting long shots and showing all the promise of a mini Tiger Woods or Karrie Webb.
The scores were sensational and the students, parents, helpers and teachers all enjoyed participating in a wonderful sporting event.
Tony Collier, a golf professional working with Golf Victoria junior development program and the Hepburn Springs Golf Club, was the day's host.
All of the schools contributed greatly to the organisation on the day.
The day concluded with a sausage sizzle, cooked by volunteers from the Hepburn Golf Club, and the awarding of trophies for the top scores.
The boys champion was Aiden Cronin and the girls champion was Shari Lee Olver, both from Daylesford Primary School.
Who knows, perhaps the next Australian golfing champion is right here in town.
