Victoria's best battle in Classic

13 Mar, 2007 11:03 AM
BOWLERS from across Victoria converged at the Daylesford Bowling Club on Sunday for the Men's Classic.

Twenty-eight teams battled in windy conditions during the full day of competition.

Tongala's Aldis Riters defeated Greg Brown of Central Wendouree to take out the classic.

The two local teams in the tournament were unable to bring home any glory, but local bowler Ted Lee played in the winning side.

Tournament director David Beardsley said Mr Lee's name would be printed in gold leaf on the club's Men's Classic board.

"It's a good achievement," he said.

The tournament attracted 28 teams from places including Melbourne, Tongala and Queenscliffe.

Mr Beardsley said there were a lot of teams from Melbourne.

"Teams came from all over Victoria. It was very well attended," he said.

Mr Beardsley said the maximum the greens could take was 30 sides.

He was pleased with the number of teams participating in the annual event.

He said some games were very close.

"The finals were played over three ends. Players couldn't afford to make a mistake."

There were seven sections in the tournament.
