Turning to the tables for another season

13 Mar, 2007 11:02 AM
THE Daylesford Table Tennis Club is warming up for another spirited season.

Keen players will limber up at the club's practice matches starting next Wednesday.

Formal matches will start in April at a date to be confirmed.

Results co-ordinator Arlene Verplak said the club welcomed all ages and abilities to the friendly orientated club.

She said the oldest player was 71 and the youngest was 12.

"It's a good fun activity. It's not so hard, even the young and old can play," she said.

"You are always on your feet moving. You have to have quick reflexes."

Ms Verplak said the meetings were very laid back and enjoyable.

"You don't have to play against the same sex. It's equal opportunity for everyone," she said.

The club's team captain Teck Khee Yong is believed to be the only player in Daylesford that holds his bat like a pen.

He learnt to use the bat like this six years ago and hasn't turned back.

"It means I have to move much faster than my opponent," he said.

"I can only use one side of the bat."

Mr Yong described the game like tennis, but smaller.

He said he played the fast and exciting sport for fitness.

"You have to concentrate a lot. It keeps your mind healthy," he said.

"You also get to meet new people."

At each meeting, participants play in teams of three.

About six tables are set up at the Daylesford Table Tennis Centre at Victoria Park.

Ms Verplak said there were opportunities to play against other towns during the season.

The Trentham Table Tennis Club is one of the teams that plays Daylesford .

"We would like to extend to other clubs," Ms Verplak said.

Equipment is available for those people who want to try the sport.

All matches are played at the Daylesford Table Tennis Centre at Victoria Park on Wednesdays at 7.30pm.
