WHAT a day, Mother's Day was at the Daylesford Speedway.
The day started with two heats of racing in all classes, and, for the first time this season, there was a field of eight ladies in the ladies race.
The blokes moved over and let the ladies have a go. Apart from Nola Oakley (in her grandson's car 84) hitting her daughter Michele Basten (car 90) in the first lap and causing her to spin, the drivers went unscathed.
Shannon Kakoschke (car 25) won the final of the ladies' race with Lea Davey (car 82) second and Michele Basten (car 90) third.
The ladies commented how fast and smooth the track was compared to last year.
The track is a credit to all club members who have worked all season on it to make it a slick fast track.
I had the privilege of going as a passenger with one of the junior drivers, Bradley Newlan, in the juniors' race.
Bradley managed his car really well, sliding through the corners and avoiding the other cars.
Bradley and the other juniors demonstrated good driving skills with sound knowledge of the gears and pedals, good self-discipline and care for others.
The club supported eight junior drivers, who have just completed a junior driver program at the track with instructors Gareth Wilson and Bob Williams.
Just before interval the Leonard's Hill CFA extinguished a car that was on fire in the centre of the track.
All drivers and passengers must wear fireproof overalls and underwear at all times when racing.
We appreciate the support and help of the Leonard's Hill CFA for this exercise and during the season.
The caravan race had plenty of cars and vans and, of course, a boat, which caused lots of mayhem in the 25-lap race.
The final placings were: first Phil Attwell; second Luke Humphrey; and third Jane Laidler.
A demolition derby followed the caravan race.
It was interesting watching the demo cars avoiding the caravan carnage strewn all over the track.
First was Bruser, second Gareth Wilson, third Daniel Meredith.
The event was well-attended and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Greg McKenzie came all the way from Seabrook to watch the racing and ended up commentating.
We would like to thank all our sponsors for their valued support and a big thank you to all our loyal members and volunteers for helping throughout the season.
