Soccer success

LIGHT rain did not dampen the enthusiasm of hundreds of school children and supporters who gathered at Cricket Willow for the fifth Soccer at the Willow tournament on Saturday.

Held as part of the Swiss Italian Festa, 15 teams participated from Daylesford, St Michael's, Yandoit, Drummond, Bullarto, Castlemaine, Ballan and Hepburn primary schools and Castlemaine and Daylesford secondary colleges.

Hepburn Primary School and Castlemaine Secondary College participated for the first time, with the Hepburn under-10s and Castlemaine under-12s both coming second in their respective competitions.

Event organiser Cynthia Heider said the day attracted hundreds of participants and family members.

"It was a fantastic day. There was plenty of action," she said.

"It was a great day to promote soccer and gave the kids a go."

Ms Heider said the lush green oval of Cricket Willow was transformed into three soccer grounds where teams played 15-minute games under the expert guidance of the Daylesford and Hepburn United Soccer Club.

There was also a sausage sizzle and raffles.

She said participants enjoyed meeting and playing other schools.

The highlight of the afternoon was an exciting penalty shoot-out that decided the under-12 final between Castlemaine and St Michael's Two - which St Michael's Two won.

Trophies and special prizes were awarded to the winning teams and players.
