Saints break the barrier

31 Jul, 2007 10:17 AM
TRENTHAM Reserve came alive on Saturday night after the Saints won their first game in two years in Maryborough Castlemaine District Football League.

The bottom side beat Dunolly by three points in a thriller. The last time the Saints sang their song was August 20, 2005.

But Dunolly almost pinched the four points the club's been desperately seeking all year after clawing back a 33-point deficit in a tense final quarter.

Kallen Young, Paul Keirl, Craig Perri, Craig Beams, Brad Taylor and Ben Muir were best players for the winners.

Earlier in the year Dunolly, which is second from the bottom of the ladder, beat the Saints by 15 points at Dunolly in round three.

Both sides were desperate to win the match and scores were locked together at 2.2.14 at quarter time. Trentham kicked five goals to four in the second term to lead by six points at the main break.

The Saints then surged ahead with a five goal to two third quarter. But Dunolly fought back as Trentham began trying to defend its lead.

Coach Adam Coles said his players deserved the win after enduring a tough run of losses.

"It will certainly brighten things up on the track this week," Coles said.

President Vin Cowell said the club would benefit significantly from the win.

"It's really boosted the whole club. We all celebrated long into the night," Mr Cowell said.

"We knew Dunolly were struggling to win games as well this season so we really worked hard to prepare for the match. A loss would have been devastating and it would have made the last few games tough to face," he said.

He said the victory would also do a lot for the club's recruiting prospects in 2008.

"The win does so much to help us attract players to the club," Mr Cowell said.

But he said although the win was fantastic for the club, its supporters and the town immediate onfield success wasn't a part of Trentham's plan in 2007.

"At the start of the year we just set out improve the club's finances and to field three sides every week," Mr Cowell said.

"We've done that well. Over the next three years we want to start to strengthen the club and build on the work we have done this year."

Trentham also won the reserves and under-17s games on Saturday, a feat it hasn't achieved since 2003.

The Saints face third-placed Carisbrook this Saturday at Carisbrook.

Avoca and Harcourt sit on top of the MCDFL ladder.
