Rousing reception

25 Sep, 2007 11:27 AM
DAYLESFORD'S first premiership win in 46 years was recognised with a civic reception by the Hepburn Shire Council last week.

Councillors, team officials and players gathered at the town hall in celebration of the win.

Daylesford Football Club captain Rob Rodgers said it had taken a few days for the reality of the win to sink in and the team was buoyed at the continuing support the club was receiving after the game.

"I'm still over the moon," Rodgers said.

"It was pretty surreal at the time but things hit home when I woke up Sunday morning with the medal still around my neck.

"The turnout from the supporters was fantastic. We thought everyone would just be happy with the win but to have everyone turn-up here as well is great."

Hepburn Shire Council Acting Mayor Tim Hayes said he hoped the civic reception for the Bulldogs would become a tradition for any club who wins a premiership within the shire.

"It's been a long time between wins and this is a great win for the Daylesford community," Cr Hayes said.

"I hope we are able to do this sort of thing in future years. In the past we haven't afforded this type of recognition to clubs who have won.

"What we are hopefully doing this year is starting a new tradition where we can recognise all the winning teams across the shire."

Among the guests at the reception was Bill Malone, one of the premiership players of the 1961 winning team.

"It was magnificent, it was a long time coming," Malone said.

"It was a very good game, a very tight game. I'd say we are due for two in a row ... or three."

Daylesford Football Club coach Phil Davis said the club was already planning for a 2008 tilt at the cup.

"We are just starting to talk about it now," Davis said.

"This is just wonderful and I know the players are very appreciative of everything."
