DAYLESFORD'S Nigel Howard has completed a 250km bike ride to raise money for breast cancer research.
He was part of a Breast Cancer Network Australia riding team that participated in the annual Around The Bay Bike Ride.
Howard's team raised $37,000.
"All 13 of us successfully completed the 250km course in around nine hours riding time in 32-degree heat," Howard said.
We smashed last year's fund-raising effort of $28,500," he said.
Daylesford businesses Spa Gym and Daylesford Seafood Bar sponsored Howard's effort.
The 33-year-old said the 2007 event brought out the best in his team.
"This year, in what I suspect was a moment of madness, we decided as a team to attempt a further 40km of the course," Howard said.
"As tiring and painful as it was we know that it compares in no way to the shock and distress that a diagnosis of Breast Cancer imposes on any individual and friends and families.
"(The wife of) one of our team mates ...was diagnosed in January 2005, so we have a personal relationship to this foundation. BCNA provides both breast cancer sufferer's and their families through the process of diagnosis treatment,"
he said.
The team proudly wore the BCNA colours of pink.
Mr Howard is married with four daughters and plays football for Hepburn in the Central Highlands Football League.
