NEWLYN has continued Bungaree's early season woes with an upset 17-point win at home.
The Cats secured their second success of 2010 with a gutsy performance in slippery conditions, extending the Demons' losing streak to five matches and their win-loss record to 1-7, eight rounds into the season.
Newlyn coach Shaun Smith praised his young band of players for their efforts on Saturday, which he believes has given the group some added self-belief after a tough start to the year.
"It's a really good vibe after the game and hopefully it makes them (Newlyn players) realise we can win games. We're not as bad as everyone's making us out to be," Smith said.
Newlyn, which led the match at every change, created plenty of opportunities despite lacking a key forward, booting 10.14 (74) to Bungaree's 8.9 (57).
"It has hurt us a bit (not having a key forward), but that's why I was really happy we had 24 shots on goal," Smith said.
Smith said Chris Eastwell was again the Cats' best through the middle of the ground, while Brandon Greenwood and Adrian Chew played well off the wing and Tom Lindsay was clever up forward.
Meanwhile, a disappointed Bungaree joint coach Greg Middleton believes a number of his players are simply content with "so-so efforts".
"A game like this is a big reality check for the club as a whole and there is quite a few players there thinking they're a little bit better than what they are," Middleton said.
Newlyn will travel to Daylesford this weekend, while Bungaree looks to clinch four points in a match against Creswick.
