WHAT was billed as a mini-grand final fizzled into a cakewalk as Newlyn steamrolled Creswick to win by 81 points on Saturday.
While the first quarter was relatively even, the last three quarters were a procession as Newlyn's fitness proved a telling factor.
It added to aerial strength, teamwork, mobility and a game plan that Creswick could not match.
Adrian Chew was outstanding for the Cats.
He was adept at reading the play and placed huge value on transferring possession quickly and to advantage.
He was also unselfish near goal and a link man in the middle.
Chris Eastwell marked strongly all day, while playing-coach Shaun Smith was incredibly clean and precise with hand and foot, and he hurt the Wickers with every possession.
At one stage, the procession had reached nine goals to nil before the Wickers pinched the last two goals before half-time.
It was a bad move as Newlyn reacted with renewed pressure in the third term and went on a nine-goal-to-one riot, while Creswick scored the final two majors of the game.
The Bruce Redman Shield is rightfully in the hands of Newlyn.
Jamie Wiese and Marty McGuinness were fabulous in patches for the Wickers but unable to sustain the effort.
Newlyn 18.7 (115) d Creswick 5.4 (34).
