THE region's horse competitors have a unique way of beating the horse flu epidemic. Friends of Ballarat Pony Clubs will run a video competition, involving competitors recording dressage tests and sending
them to judges.
Glenlyon Pony Club's Lesley Hewitt said most competitors from the Hepburn Shire would jump at the chance to compete, given the lack of competitions this year.
Ms Hewitt said riders were forced to limit their competitions and training because of equine influenza.
"The Pony Club Association of Victoria has strongly advised clubs to cancel events for the remainder of 2007 to assist ANSWER and the Queensland Government's efforts to contain the spread of the
virus and break the cycle of infection and to help minimise the risk of the virus spreading to Victoria," Ms Hewitt said.
"Because of this the committee of the Glenlyon and District Pony Club canceled rallies in September and October."
The club will hold an unmounted rally in November, where young riders will attend without their horses.
At the rally the riders will have the opportunity to learn how to make bridles, belts and lead ropes.
The December rally will be a trail ride at Boomerang Ranch in Daylesford using ranch horses.
Ms Hewitt said that while riders were disappointed at the cancellation of the rally, they believed it was important to do their bit to stop the spread of equine influenza.
"The cancellation of the rallies means that we have had to postpone giving out the awards for best rider for the 2006/07 season. This will be done at a later date," Ms Hewitt said.
