DAYLESFORD'S first roller derby league, Daylesford Derby Dolls, has had a promising start, according to league president Ros Lynne.
The Dolls met for their first training session on May 28.
Ms Lynne said the numbers had exceeded expectations.
"We had 20 people turn up which is an amazing first meeting,'' she said.
"The potential is huge. It's going to go a long way.''
Interest in the sport was sparked when the Daylesford ARC hosted a bout between the Geelong and Ballarat Roller Derby League as part of ChillOut in March this year.
More than 500 spectators attended the event.
Daylesford ARC manager Lissa McIldowney announced last month that Daylesford would form its own league.
Ms Lynne said they could be "bouting'' in six to seven months against other leagues in Ballarat, Geelong and Bendigo.
"They're really excited and full of enthusiasm. There are girls that have never skated before and they are learning to skate,'' she said.
"Apart from standing up on our skates we've been leaning how to block, how to do knee-slides and how to do a derby.
"We just love it. It's an awesome sport."
The Dolls were recently granted $2000 in Community Strengthening funding from Hepburn Shire Council, to assist them with the establishment of their league.
They are still calling for anyone aged 18 and older to join in their training sessions.
No skating experience is necessary as full training is provided.
Men can also participate, particularly as referees.
Would-be roller derby queens should register their interest and skate size by calling the ARC on 5348 1777 or by sending an email to daylesfordrollerderby@gmail.com.a u
Cost is $6 per session and skates are provided.
