Champion no stick in the mud

HE MIGHT only be 11-years-old but Creswick's Dion Bartholomew is already leaving his mark in motorcycle circles.

Dion was crowned number one at the Yamaha Australian Off Road Series at the weekend.

The final round was held in South Australia and, in pouring rain, Dion was able to come from behind after becoming stuck in mud to place second and clinch the championship.

Dion only needed to finish fifth or better to win the series.

"There was a big puddle and it looked like it was flat and I went straight into it and couldn't get my bike out of it," Dion said.

"I was panicking. The sweep rider had to come in and help pull me out, but all the other kids did exactly the same thing I did in different places around the course.

"The course was pretty technical. We had to go up some hills, around logs and go through creeks with running water that was flowing so fast it nearly pushed me over when I went through."

Dion made the trip with his father Shaun to South Australia for the race.

"We got to the track at 4am in the morning because we drove all night and it was raining bucketloads," Mr Bartholomew said.

"He lost over 10 minutes on the first lap stuck in the bog. The average lap time around the track was about 12 or 13 minutes and he finished his first one in 25 minutes.

"He rode like a kid possessed."

Going into the final round Dion had a lead of 18 points against his competitors.

The conclusion of the series means an end to travelling across Australia for the father-son team for the time being.

Dion said his goal next year would be to improve his times and practise.

"I have my own little track next door that I practise on nearly every day," Dion said.
