 Burras bog down

Burras bog down

28 Aug, 2007 10:04 AM
HEPBURN faces a sudden-death fight to stay in the Central Highlands Football League finals after losing badly to Waubra on the weekend.

The Burras will meet Dunnstown in a semi-final on Sunday after suffering a 57-point defeat at the hands of Waubra at Bungaree last Saturday.

The premiership contender failed to match Waubra's intensity at the ball and suffered a slow death from the first bounce.

Apart from Hepburn's best player, Lee Cox, who kicked six majors, the Burras struggled to penetrate the determined Waubra defence.

At the other end, spearhead Lee Brown booted seven for the winners.

The difference in forward line potency turned out to be costly.

Final scores were Waubra 19.7 (121) versus Hepburn's 9.10 (64).

Burras coach Shane Robertson said his side lacked the poise needed to win finals matches. He said skill errors and a slow start ultimately cost the Burras the match.

"But they're things we can work for next week against Dunnstown," Robertson said.

"Hopefully we can get a more even contribution from all players over all four quarters," he said.

Dunnstown is coming off a 12-point elimination final win over Learmonth on Sunday, but will still enter the match at Wallace as underdogs.

The Burras will rely on key players Andy McKay, Cox and Daniel and Jarrod James to take the match away from the Towners, but will be confident of a win and another chance of winning their way through to another grand

final.

Dunnstown coach Simon Eason will look for another spirited effort from his charges.

He said he was confident of matching the Burras and coming away with victory. Hepburn won by 13 points last time the clubs played, which was in round 12 at Hepburn.

Final scores were Hepburn 10.8 (68) to Dunnstown's 8.7 (55).
