Bellair glides home in Narromine Cup

04 Dec, 2007 09:39 AM
A HEPBURN Shire pilot has won an international gliding competition.

Glenlyon glider pilot Terry Bellair won the prestigious Narromine Cup last week in his DG-400 sailplane.

Bellair's four flights covered 748km, 563km, 693km and 533km, landing back at Narromine on each occasion. The distances were enough to score first place on three days and second on the other.

Bellair is also well placed on the international Online Competition, which scores glider pilots throughout the world on their six longest flights.

He is currently the highest-placed Australian in the OLC competition and in seventh place worldwide.

Narromine is considered to be one of Australia's best gliding sites and conditions were quite good, with climbs in thermals to more than 13,000 feet on the first two days.

The event attracted more than 50 pilots from 11 countries. The competition was restricted from seven to four flying days due thunderstorms,.

Bellair is a member of Bendigo Gliding Club, which operates from Raywood airfield. Raywood also provides excellent soaring, with Terry achieving a 790km "out and return" flight from there on Melbourne Cup day (via Ouyen,

Quambatook, Warracknabeal and Corop).

He has previously flown 845km from Raywood, on a flight via Sea Lake and Booligal in New South Wales and Charlton.
