Saints strike out for season's start

29 Apr, 2008 11:17 AM
DAYLESFORD Saints kicked their 2008 soccer season off with a narrow loss to 2007 finalists Sebastopol Vikings.

The Saints dominated possession throughout the game and were unlucky not to come away with at least a point from the match.

Fitness was a factor the team has identified as an area that needs improvement in coming matches.

Daylesford started well with a brilliant shot from Dylan Nulty in the opening minutes but it was saved well by the Sebastopol keeper.

The team played some very attractive football and started to dominate play over their more favoured opponents, but fell behind from a defensive lapse resulting in the first Sebastopol goal.

The team worked hard to score before half time, with tireless running from the Nulty boys, Tobias and Kimmy Star.

New recruit Kimmy proved to be too classy for her opposition on the wing and made several mesmerising runs and crosses.

Sebastopol held a one-nil lead at half time.

The Saints came out firing in the second half and had numerous opportunities to level the score, twice hitting the cross-bar and narrowly missing on at least 10 occasions.

Sebastopol kept its cool and scored another goal on the counter attack, after another costly Daylesford defensive mistake.

All players battled hard to push forward with Ivan Carter and Dave Ramage creating some exciting passing through the midfield.

The signs of a successful season were certainly in place throughout the match with an array of talent to choose from.

Once the players slowed the game down and kept the ball along the ground, many opportunities to score presented.

Final score: Two-nil to Sebastopol Vikings.

Best players: Jack Nulty, Dylan Nulty, Kimmy Star, Ivan Carter and Nick Jansen.
