Saints put paid to reigning premiers

25 Aug, 2009 11:38 AM
THE Daylesford Saints managed a classic one-nil win against reigning premiers Vic Park in the BDSA match on Sunday at Vicpark.

The result was impressive with players displaying some amazing soccer skills in the windy circumstances.

The team finally put together 90 minutes of soccer and fired on all cylinders on a difficult day weather-wise.

The team was captained by Jack Nulty, who has stepped up this year in maturity and leadership. He played in goals and boosted the defence.

Nulty's constant encouragement and chatter was a highlight of the day and showed how important he has become to the Saints' leadership group.

The Saints started well and played with determination and flair, with much running and tackling to defend their goals.

The Saints had the wind in the first half and found a goal through a free-kick from Dylan Nulty, who brilliantly smashed home a low drive from 25 yards into the bottom corner.

The Saints could have piled on more goals, with Sam Berrins and Toneka Costa twice going close, after some great passes from midfielders Carter and Beare.

Carter again found a way through the Vic Park defence, with a surging run, only to be brought down by the last player, earning another free kick that narrowly missed goal.

The defence of Laurie Nulty, Dwight Beare, Daniel Trotter and Steven Jenner was rock solid and proved too strong.

The Saints deserved the win and fought hard right to the end, ending the team's six-year drought in defeating Vic Park.

The team has one final match, against Warnambool and will need a win to be certain of finals in the following week.
