Saints battle hard for a character-building draw

17 Jun, 2008 12:11 PM
DAYLESFORD and Hepburn United drew nil-all with Victoria Park in Ballarat on Sunday.

The result effectively ended Vic Park's hot run and further boosted the confidence of the Daylesford Saints, who were playing off the back of a six-to-one win last week.

The Saints proved they have the quality to challenge for the title this season.

Daylesford held a strong defensive line and gave central midfielder Tobias Schmidt plenty of early touches as he sought to distribute the ball through the centre and out wide.

After 15 minutes Dylan Nulty moved into a goal-scoring position with the first real chance for the Saints saved by the goalkeeper.

A strong running game on the right by Kym Riley provided the platform for some solid attacking movements. Yet the Saints were unable to capitalise on a number of half-opportunities that presented themselves.

An impressive display of fluent passing from Hudson Beare helped to ensure that the pressure remained on Vic Park.

As the whistle blew on the scoreless first half, Daylesford took heart from an unyielding exhibition illustrating the potential that this team has slowly been developing. The second half, in most respects, was a reflection of the

first and the openness of the game required the young midfield to run and tackle hard.

Costa Teneka and Jack Nulty produced workhorse performances and they constantly put their bodies on the line to keep the game from becoming one sided.

As the game moved into the final stages the Saints found themselves under the type of pressure they were expecting to endure for most of the game.

Ivan Carter, Dave Ramage and Daniel Trotter were exceptional in defence with all players making vital interceptions and clearing the ball under pressure on a number of occasions.

Carter inspired the team with some great runs as he timed his ventures into midfield with exquisite precision.

Result: Daylesford 0 drew with Victoria Park 0.

Best: Jack Nulty, Ivan Carter, Costa Teneka, Dave Ramage, Daniel Trotter.
