Reality check for Creswick after being thumped by Waubra

19 May, 2009 12:52 PM
CRESWICK came back to earth on Saturday with a thud when they were blown away by Waubra.

Waubra was more flexible in its game plan, more able in the air and more skilled by hand and foot.

Into the gale, Waubra played a run-and-carry game and with it they played a long kick-and-mark style game.

This kept Creswick's pugnacious tackling and contested ball play in check.

The only quarter that Creswick won was the third, and that by just a goal when the wind assistance was four goals.

While the efforts of Jake Hepworth, Mick Griffin, Skip Patterson, Clint Robinson and Ben Murray were commendable across four quarters, Tim Reinerts was the only clear winner for the day and his ever more probing kicks created numerous midfield opportunities.

Injuries carried by Weise, Kerr, Spencely and Ellis made it difficult to exert any across-the-field pressure and younger players struggled.

Too often kicks sprayed out on the full and too often Waubra's switches to the attacking side went unaccounted for.

Despite this, when a courageous Matt Antonio marked and goaled, a 12-goal margin 15 minutes into the last quarter looked respectable - until Waubra raced away from a flattened Creswick with seven goals in the last 10 minutes of the game.
