NEWLYN proved it may have a say in how the top five settles after it had a strong 33-point win over Clunes on Saturday.
The Cats kicked seven goals to three in the second term before Clunes made a second-half charge in the 16.16 (112) to 12.7 (79) result.
Ben Pigdon kicked three for Newlyn while the dual forward targets for Clunes - Scott Adam and Jay Guthrie - booted seven between them.
The Magpies got within two points in the last quarter before Newlyn coach Jamie Wilson stood up and kicked two much needed goals for his side.
Newlyn's unlucky run with injuries continued with Dale Thomas missing the game with a broken finger and Chris Eastwell breaking his hand.
The two injured players will join Shane Edwards (leg) and Dan McKinnon on the sidelines.
"We've got a good side but just had a shocking run with injuries," Wilson said.
"If we win half our games for the rest of the season we will be happy."
Tony Halliday continued his impressive form for Clunes while Gareth Campbell and Danny Milne were handy as usual.
Newlyn will be aiming to continue its run against Beaufort this Saturday while Clunes needs to bounce back before it takes on Daylesford.
