First-half heroics set up Learmonth win

25 Aug, 2009 11:40 AM
IF THE third quarter is the premiership quarter, then the second one was the elimination quarter at Dunnstown yesterday.

Learmonth held just a six-point lead at the first break, having had the use of the breeze that was coming down off Mount Warrenheip.

But the Ballarat Mazda Honda Lakies kicked five unanswered goals into the wind to open a commanding lead at the main break.

Goals to James Sobey, Ricky Leyonhjelm (three goals), who kicked two in three minutes, Tim Beacham (four goals), and then Sobey again had the lead out to 38 points before Buninyong utility Beau Guest kicked the Bombers only goal for the quarter.

Dyson George (three) was proving to be a real handful and the Learmonth defence was like an immovable object, with playing coach AJ Beacham repeatedly cutting off Buninyong's attacks.

With the breeze at their backs, the Lakies kicked the opening three goals of the third term before Tom Porter broke free from a stoppage to give Buninyong supporters some semblance of hope.

Learmonth responded with the next two majors, the second to Chris Robertson, who threw the ball onto his boot in the centre square and then watched it sail over Tim Beacham's head and roll through for an unlikely goal.

With a 62-point lead at the final change, the Lakies had the luxury of resting spearhead Tim Beacham for the last term.

Despite that, they added another five goals and kept Buninyong down to two, on a day where the Bombers never got their run going - with the exception of former North Ballarat Rooster Jake Dignan, who was clearly Buninyong's best - and were unable to find a target up forward.

Learmonth assistant coach Luke Kennelley said, while the scoreboard may not have shown it, the win was set up in the opening term.

``I think it was a good quarter, although we had the wind, it was always going to be one of those games where they battled hard, we battled hard and it was always going to be close,'' he said.

And after that Learmonth was able to get its run and carry going, he said.
