Struggling to survive

30 May, 2006 11:50 AM
THE Trentham Saints will "fight like hell" to stay in the Maryborough Castlemaine District Football League, club secretary Kirk Bradbury said.

The club cannot field a reserves team and fear more senior players will leave the 100-year-old club.

Club president Kelvin Murphy said once players started leaving, it would have a "snowball" effect on other players.

"We've heard second-hand that a significant player from Kyneton has left. When other players hear this they'll think they don't have to stick around," he said.

"I expect some players to leave because we're not winning any games."

The Saints are on the bottom of the ladder having been beaten by up to 250 points.

Mr Murphy said the losing streak had impacted on players and training numbers were down.

"We're not being beaten, we're being murdered but we will not give up," he said.

"If we win a game it will turn things around."

Mr Bradbury said Trentham's netball teams were "doing well".

However junior footballers tended to play with Daylesford Secondary College before moving to Daylesford Football Club with their friends.

"Ideally we'd like to see a reserves team and be competitive," he said.

"I'd love to see young families move into town. There are a lot of retirees in Trentham and it's a smaller scale than Daylesford."

Mr Bradbury said the club would keep struggling to stay alive while the newly-elected committee learnt the ropes.

"We don't want to shut the door. We are passionate about it. A country town without a football team doesn't have a heart," he said.

He said the club hadn't thought about merging but said it was an option.

This week the Saints play Carisbrook at Trentham.
