Moloney inspires Bulldogs' with insight into how his team won flag

31 Mar, 2009 11:15 AM
GUEST speaker Shaune Moloney brought a sense of dejavu to more than 100 members of the Daylesford Football and Netball Club fraternity at the Royal Hotel on Saturday evening in an outstanding address on how his beloved North Ballarat team won last year's premiership.

Moloney, the Roosters' captain, told his spellbound audience in a sublime and eloquent manner, the two major reasons for success were a change of culture and respect not only among the players, but also towards the club administration, supporters and the people of Ballarat.

"We studied the Sydney Swans' policy of how good their stringent measures to their player behaviour worked and put that into practice at the Roosters," Moloney said.

When told the Daylesford Jayco Bulldogs had also adopted the Swans "no dickheads" culture, Moloney said: "That is brilliant to have that style of player code of conduct and it will work as it did with the Roosters.

"When we won the flag, the club policy was to show no arrogance and be humble to ourselves, our fans, other teams and the people who live in the City of Ballarat.

"Before the season started we (the club) had a serious clean out - friends were lost and players got burnt.

"There was a strong leadership group - no big heads, wannabees or has-beens - just a total team effort."

North Ballarat, in association with Werribee, is a feeder club for North Melbourne in a revamped VFL competition.

Moloney also invited players, supporters and committee members from Daylesford to attend one of the Roosters' training sessions and attend a dinner.

DFC's new 2009 captain James Evans, who works with Moloney at Ballarat Clarendon College as a PE teacher, said the Roosters' coach's speech was riveting and the Bulldogs could learn from his experience.

At the DFNC Jumper Presentation night, Bulldogs' coach Luke Beattie, who was on a high after a 29-point win over South Melton earlier in the day, announced that Cade O'Brien and Xavier Keighran would support Evans as vice-captains of the senior side, while Reserves coach Joel

Adams named Jarrod Adams captain with Adam Brereton and Grant Boyd as co-vice-captains.

Steve Cowan was appointed under-18 coach.

With the assistance of DJFC executive Stephen Walsh and Daylesford secondary PE teacher Martyn Nettleton the DFNC is embarking on a mission to take its sports to children by publishing results in the school's newsletter each fortnight.

There is also a strong commitment from the DFNC committee to be known as the "family club", with players proud of representing their sport but also the community of Daylesford and parents of all players from under-15 to senior level.
