Hepburn in comfortable win against Gordon

29 Jul, 2008 12:37 PM
AS EXPECTED by most football observers, Hepburn was able to comfortably defeat the young improving Gordon line-up.

Although winning by 102 points, the game never rose to any great heights.

The story of the match was star forward Lee Cox's injury.

After starting well, kicking two goals in the first quarter and bringing his season's tally to 87 goals, Cox in the first minute took a typical contested mark and immediately grabbed his hamstring.

Unselfishly, he had the presence of mind to find Jarrod James, who ran into an open goal.

Cox left the field and stayed off for the remainder of the game as a precaution.

The good news is it was only a slight strain and he could be available next week.

Coach Shane Robertson rotated several players out of the goal square and without relying on one player to the bulk of the scoring, the Burras had eight goal kickers for the afternoon.

Dan O'Halloran was one player to stand up, his hard running across half forward and throughout the midfield was the spark Hepburn was looking for from the emerging youngster.

In Salesi Uhi's absence, the ruck duties were shared between Nick Walsh and Kane Robertson. Both played good games with Robertson kicking two goals and Walsh controlling the centre square bounces.

Four goals scored against it was another good day at the office for the backline.

Gary Byers was in good touch and John Comelli swept across the half-back line picking up numerous possessions.

Comelli has been in good form over the past month, he is finally injury free and is starting to wind the clock back to 2004 when he had a stellar season.

Matthew Peake and Daniel James were the architects in the midfield and set up many scoring opportunities, as did Beau Ryan who did a lot of bustling work under the packs. Andy McKay was able to capitalise on those opportunities, dazzling the crowd with five goals. But the goal

of the day undoubtedly went to Matt Dillon who kicked a 45m checkside on his right foot.

Score: Hepburn 19.16.130 def Gordon 4.4.28

Goals: A McKay 5, D O'Halloran 3, J James 3, L Cox 2, M Stanley 2,

K Robertson 2, M Dillon 1, N Walsh 1.

Best: D O'Halloran, D James, M Peake, A McKay, N Walsh, M Stanley.
