Hepburn fails to impress

10 Aug, 2010 01:12 PM
BUNGAREE travelled to the Laurie Sullivan Reserve to take on ladder leaders Hepburn on Saturday, with the biggest highlight for the day probably being the final siren.

The Burras couldn't get any sort of momentum going against a well-drilled Bungaree outfit, and didn't kick away until midway through the third term.

Going into the match without four of its star players in O'Halloran, Shepherd, Barnes and Johnson, Hepburn knew that Bungaree had not lost any match this year by a big margin.

In saying that they were ready for a real contest, and that's what they got.

Co-captain Allan Ware was the stand-out. across half back, his sure hands and spoiling were exceptional, teaming up with Daniel Smith who had the task of curbing star forward Jayden Reid.

Smith put in another good performance against a quality opponent in what has been a fine season so far.

Also performing well was Gary Byers who looks to have fully recovered from the knee injury that has sidelined him for much of the 2010 season.

John Comelli found plenty of the ball through the midfield, and Lee Cox and Andy McKay capitalised on his good work kicking five goals apiece.

Jimmy Rodgers also bought the crowd alight on occasions with his clever skills, but the highlights were few and far between for Hepburn.

Basic skill errors and poor kicking made it very difficult for the forwards to have any real impact on the game, a rarity the Burra supporters have been used to this season.

Next week it's the small road trip to Newlyn to wind up the home and away season.

Scores: Hepburn 17.18.120 def Bungaree 11.5.71. Goals: Cox 5, McKay 5, Rodgers 3, Rees 1, O'Halloran 1, James 1, Baker 1. Best: Ware, Smith, Comelli, Byers.
