Daylesford win achieved with dignity and respect for opponents

"If you can meet with triumph and disaster and treat those impostors just the same ... you are a man my son" - Rudyard Kipling

THOSE indelible words are inscribed on the marble archway in the walk onto the famous Wimbledon Centre Court.

They are synonymous with the mantra of the Daylesford Football Netball Club, which put on display 22 men at Eureka Stadium, North Ballarat, on Saturday.

Victory with dignity and respect for your opponents was paramount for the Bulldogs.

The triumph of the senior team winning a second premiership in three consecutive grand finals and the "Pups" their first in the CHFL shows the double celebration was one for the ages.

DFNC showed the strength of being a family club giving its heart and soul to play as a champion team that doesn't know the meaning of losing against a team of champions.

The camaraderie, attitude and culture is not only about the enjoyment of playing for their families but also for the township and community of Daylesford.

Captain James Evans summed up: "It's redemption after getting smashed by Hepburn in last year's grand final.

"It was embarrassing last year, but we won all three games against them this season.

"The Pups winning the under-18s was important and the future is bright with our local talent.

"To win was unbelievable and quite surreal. To captain these blokes is an honour.

"They have a supreme will to win and refuse to lose."

Coach Luke Beattie is on cloud nine with the premiership and his wife Shayna expecting their first child.

Beattie was involved in his fourth senior grand final and it was 12 years between drinks after success with Kyneton in 1997.

"In comparison Daylesford's win was bigger and better because as coach you understand how tough it is to get to this point (winning grand final)," Beattie said.

"This is very much about local players who work and live together. This is a real family club.

"Its outstanding to watch the involvement of the wives, girlfriends and children as part of the club.

"When we were down (four goals first quarter, 13 points final quarter) I always thought we were capable of wining.

"This is not a team of stars, but a unit who just don't give in and will not accept defeat."
