THE junior and senior football clubs in Daylesford are to be brought together for the first time in a decade, resulting in a stronger football community, Daylesford Junior Football Club president Stephen Walsh said.
The Daylesford Junior Football Club held its AGM last month and members voted for the club to transfer from the Castlemaine and District Junior Football League to the Central Highlands Football League.
It means the juniors are to affiliate with Daylesford Football Netball Club for season 2010 and form a new team at under-12 age level, as well as field a current under-15 team.
"This is an exciting time for the DJFC as this will bring together the two clubs - junior and senior - for the first time since 1998 when the DJFC moved to the Castlemaine and District Junior Football League and fielded team's separate of the senior body," Mr Walsh said.
"The Daylesford Junior Football Club committee members and families are committed to strengthening the relationship between the junior and senior clubs and along with the Daylesford Football Netball Club, believe we will now have a stronger football community."
He said the new era in football would allow for a greater continuity of player involvement from junior to seniors and a greater ability to ensure player retention.
"We will assist and encourage a greater involvement with the current Auskick program, will explore the options of developing junior netball as well as football and be able to share both junior and senior clubs' facilities and have mutual volunteer support," Mr Walsh said.
He said the decision to move the leagues had not been taken lightly.
The club had been struggling to field teams in past years and having two under-15 teams, one for each league, was not viable.
Under the new arrangments, the club will play its home games of under-12 on the current No.2 oval.
They will maintain all of their junior club facilities and training and meetings will still be at the junior oval.
Although the club will be required to play in Bulldog colours, it will acknowledge the history of years of junior Demons on the new jumpers
"The Daylesford Junior Football Club is to retain its own identity and will continue to function in the same manner but with the combining of our Junior Demons with our Junior Bulldogs we believe we will create a much stronger relationship within our community,' 'Mr Walsh said.
