Cox shines to help Hepburn into final

08 Sep, 2009 01:51 PM
A FIRST quarter six-goal avalanche by star forward Lee Cox was the catalyst for the Burras' dismantling of Learmonth at the Dunnstown Reserve on Saturday.

In doing so, Hepburn advances to the 2009 CHFL Grand Final.

In complete contrast to the previous week, the skies were blue and the fleet-footed Hepburn led its opposition a merry dance, kicking to the railway end.

But it was Cox who lit up the arena with his aerial dominance, goal kicking and quick hands.

Not even a heavy bump off the ball or being poleaxed into the fence could stop him as Hepburn went into the quarter-time break with a 49-point advantage.

Dan O'Halloran, with two goals, and the creative Nev Purtell were also up and about.

Learmonth has been one of the more fancied sides of 2009 for good reason and mounted a challenge in the second quarter.

Although it managed three second-quarter goals, it was Craig Leehane who repelled everything that came his way.

Leehane again had the better of James Sobey keeping the Lakie star goalless.

The back line worked in tandem getting the ball to the likes of Matthew Peake, Jarrod and Daniel James to wreak havoc.

Seventeen-year-old Sam Conroy was superb all day, he controlled the ruck around the ground, he racked up the possessions and also managed to sneak forward to score two goals.

The match produced two of the best marks seen for a very long time.

Ash Wedding's one-hander in a pack of players could only be described as mercurial.

But, not to be outdone, Andy McKay on the outer wing stood on his opponent's head to take an all-time classic.

McKay again worked tirelessly in all areas of his game, getting better as the game progressed.

Hepburn's interchange rotations worked perfectly with players bobbing up everywhere. But, in all fairness, Learmonth had succumbed to injuries and didn't have the manpower to run with the Hepburn outfit.

Now all is set for another local Grand Final between Hepburn and Daylesford at the Northern Oval on Saturday.

Score: Hepburn 20.11.132 def Learmonth 9.7.61. Goals: L Cox 7, D O'Halloran 3, A Wedding 2, N Purtell 2, S Conroy 2, J James 1, P Buntsma, M Peake 1, A McKay 1. Best: C Leehane, A McKay, T Johnson, L Cox, S Conroy, M Peake, J James, D O'Halloran.
